The
Retail Theft Initiative (RTI) involves the training of retail staff from
across the region to work with groups of young people arrested for shop
theft.
During discussions offenders are made more aware of the consequences
of their behaviour on their families, friends and retail staff. They are
also asked to think about their future and what impact their offences could
have.
However, the main purpose of the sessions is for participants to consider
the effect shop theft has on those people who work in the retail sector.
Pre-session questionnaires indicate that young people may not be aware that
retail crime is not 'victimless'. RTI often helps to address this problem.
